What’s the Best Color for a Chicken Coop?

My winter hoarding of egg boxes, butter boxes, and sawed-off milk cartons,  is looking a lot less crazy now that I have planted up my new ad-hoc greenhouse. Photo guy will literally be eating his accusatory “crazy cat lady collector” words, once all the seedlings start to pop.

Time now, to turn my attention to a singular obsession of mine; Chickens.

Squeezing in some design time to stylize and outfit the old outhouse with nesting boxes and all the comforts of a chicken home, is my current late night hobby. I wish I could just “I Dream of Jeannie” the whole thing, since I’m certain the chickens are not all that fussy about their living conditions. I keep remembering my mother, and her brood of chickens. She would simply unleash them in the garage. They would nest in the rafters and on the window ledges. Her best layer, lived atop an old paint can. My mothers chickens were not complainers, and the eggs were always plentiful.

But I want it to be nice for them. My daughter found me this excellent window, which I’m considering installing and dressing up with wood shutters. The chickens will need a garden to look out on, and most importantly, a fence to ensure their safety from the foxes.

So the big question on the design docket is, what color should I paint the chicken house? I think chickens would look best, with a foil of either cobalt blue, or a dazzling nearly pink-red behind them. Since the main house is white, and the chicken house is the chicken house, I have unlimited options for the structure. Should I make it a multi-colored MacKenzie-Childs sort of playful collection of color, or do you think Chickens prefer a more sophisticated color approach in their dwellings?

Come on people-can you help ME pick a color? My chickens will be white, and brown; what color should I paint the house???????

I rather like dove grey – and powder blue. Calm, serene colors that will blend with white or brown eggs and white and brown chickens…perhaps a nice slate roof, too. Shutters? I don;t know…you might make it look like a doll house, then. Kind of silly since the chickens won’t appreciate it, and shutters call for window boxes filled with flowers, like geraniums. Too much fuss…
Have you seen the lovely chicken coops on etsy? They are works of art.
